Lura
M'bem di fora (Times Square)

Cesaria Evora is the name most world-music fans associate with Cape Verde, but the great singer has been enjoted by a much younger diva, Lura. Cape Verde is a string of islands off the West African coast, colonized long ago by Portugal. Like the music of Evora, Lura's repetoire bears little kinship to the sounds of Africa's mainland but great affinity to another former Portuguese colony populated in part by the descendents of African slaves, Brazil. Lura's soulfully emotive vocals are the warm, forceful center of a gently lilting, acoustic music whose emotional temperature is kept to simmer, always cooking but never boiling over.
