"M'Bem di Fora" (Times Square)

The title of Lura's new album translates to "I Come From the Country," although that's not entirely true. The singer, who performs Tuesday and Wednesday at Jazz Alley, is a big-city gal (Lisbon) and the country in the title is not Portugal but Cape Verde, the nation off the west African coast that's home to Lura's parents.

The lilting "M'Bem de Fora" is well-rooted in Cape Verdean traditions, however, as Lura captures the islands' rhythms on such tales of everyday life as the sobering "Bida Mariadu" and, energized by the funana beats of the countryside, "Fitico di Funana" and the title song.  04/13/07 >> go there
