Word is, you can't truly understand Lura, aka Maria de Lurdes Pina Assuncao, until you see her live.

The Portuguese singer-songwriter of Capo Verdean heritage brings new meaning to the often-fuzzy "world music" label. Lura manages to fuse African, Latin and European musical sensibilities into her mellow music.

It's pop, it's a smorgasbord of Capo Verdean rhythms, it's indigenous percussion instruments, and it's riding into Monmouth University tonight.

Lura, 8 tonight, Pollak Theatre, Monmouth University, 400 Cedar Ave., West Long Branch. $30. (732) 263-6889 or www.monmouth.edu/arts.
