Lura "M'bem Di Fora"; Times Square Records 3 stars out of 4 "M'bem Di Fora" has been alternately translated "I come from the country" and "I come from far away." Both indicate the nature of Lura's second international release, a soft-toned disc whose songs reminisce about the easy atmosphere of simple farmers' festivals on the isolated islands of Cape Verde, Lura's home. Instrumentation is vast, but most songs combine easy, shaking rhythms with light guitar, accordion and choral airs that resemble Brazilian forro. It's cozy, at times a little melancholy and evocative of dim lights shining down on dancers at a Creole celebration in the village night. Lura comes from the country, but she's been around the world, and the arrangements reveal her cosmopolitan side. The title track strays the farthest from home, a great duet with compatriot Zéca di Nha Reinalda that vibrates with a rhythm that sounds like Senegalese mblax. It's one of several nods to the African roots of Cape Verdean music. RIYL: Cesaria Evora, Angelique Kidjo 05/25/07 >> go there
