Portuguese singer Lura explores the rural music of her Cape Verdean heritage on her new release M'Bem di Fora (Times Square). Not limiting herself to the better-know morna or coladeira styles, this artist explores some of the other rhythms native to this archipelago of 10 islands such funana, batuku, and mazurka and this gives her music a unique sound. More laid-back and acoustic than 2004's Di Korpu ku Alma, the new album abounds with tasteful guitar, accordion, light percussion and Lura's robustly impassioned lyrics that reflect the artistry of the people on Cape Verde's arid and isolated islands. The pensive mood of half the album is offset by festive cuts like "Romaria" (which evokes a Cape Verdean street fiesta and memories of West Africa in its persistent military snare-drum rhythm) or the party-like "Fitico di Funana;' a flirtatious dance rhythm driven by a sinuous soukous guitar line. Another standout is "Galanton" which features 6/8 waltz rhythm reminiscent of the Caribbean tumba. [www.timessquarerecords.net]  06/01/07
