Irish Band Dervish to Perform in Hailey; Getting You Ready For St. Patricks Day

By SunValleyCenter

Get in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit with Irish band Dervish! The band is coming from Ireland and will tour the United States and come to Hailey on Thursday, March 15 to play the Liberty Theater.

Built upon the hauntingly charismatic vocals of Cathy Jordan and the dazzling virtuosity of award-winning instrumentalists Tom Morrow on fiddle, Liam Kelly on flute and Shane Mitchell on accordion, Dervish first attracted attention in the early 1990s with its legendary pub sessions. The band chose the name “Dervish” because it means any group of people spiritually enraptured by music, but their particular brand of rapture is 100% Irish.

Grounded by the solid rhythm playing of Brian McDonagh and Michael Holmes, a concert by Dervish ranges from high energy tunes to beautifully measured ballads, from charming lyrics of life and love to inspiring melodies that lift audiences from their seats. All the elements are knit together by Cathy Jordan’s masterful stage presence. Her stories and interaction with the audience draw people into the music in a way very few performers can achieve.

More than 20 years since its inception and with four of the original members still at the helm, Dervish has visited every corner of the globe and shared center stage with the likes of James Brown, the Buena Vista Social Club, Oasis, Sting, REM, Beck and many more. With its many recordings and busy touring schedule, Dervish has been instrumental in bringing Irish music to a worldwide audience.

The concert is the last in the 2011–2012 Sun Valley Center for the Arts Winter Performing Arts Series which featured Moira Smiley, Ben Sollee (who will be playing this summer’s Newport Jazz Festival), H’Sao and most recently, Flamenco Vivo.

Individual tickets for Dervish are $20 Sun Valley Center for the Arts members, $30 for nonmembers and $10 for students 18 and under. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.sunvalleycenter.org, call 726.9491 ex 10 or stop by The Center in Ketchum. The 2011/2012 Winter Performing Arts Series is sponsored in part by Boise State Public Radio.
