Irish band Dervish whirling through New Mexico

BY DAVID STEIN BERG
 JOURNAL 5TAFF WRITER

The Irish pub is often an incubator for music. And for bands. Such was the case with four musicians who met at Thursday jam sessions at Hennigan's in the town of Sligo in the late 1980s. The four eventually formed two bands.
One was a rock group called Who Says What. The other was a traditional band called Dervish and their debut album of traditional Irish music was called "The Boys of Sligo."
"That was in the period known as B.C. --Before Cathy," said Dervish vocalist Cathy Jordan in a phone inter view from Sligo.
"I had met the lads when came to Sligo to visit a sister who was going to college here and I always gravitated to where the music was." Jordan said when the fellows were looking for a singer for Dervish they asked her to join.
"I was delighted to do so," she said. "I was living the life of a pastry chef in Longford. So left pastry flour for musical flower."
Dervish, Jordan said, has an international following of young people in Europe, Australia and Japan.
Its American audience tends to be older. "I think if s harder to get our message across to the younger people- because it's such a vast country," she said.
Dervish is currently on its semiannual tour of the United States, including seven dates in New Mexico:
