Get down to sounds of Dervish
March 11, 2007

When one hears the sounds of the Irish band, Dervish, the Emerald Isle doesn't seem that far away.

If you want to feel a little closer to Ireland or just enjoy some good Irish music, Dervish will be playing at 4 p.m. today at 171 Cedar Arts Center's Drake House Studio Theater in Corning.

The performance is part of the group's national tour to promote their new release, "Spirit." The CD includes a diverse collection of reels, jigs and folk songs. The mixture reflects the band's desire to preserve and perform lesser-known Irish music.

The band includes seven friends: mandola player Brian McDonagh, fiddler Tom Morrow, flutist and whistle player Liam Kelley, singer Cathy Jordan, guitarist and bassist Seamus O'Dowd, accordionist Shane Mitchell and bouzouki and mandocello player Michael Holmes.

Dervish has a Web site at www.dervish.ie, where you can see video of the band performing and download music clips.

Tickets cost $15, $8 for 171 Cedar Arts Center members and $5 for children 14 and under. For more information, call (607) 936-4647 or visit www.171cedararts.com.
