Need something to get into the spirit for St. Patrick's Day?

A band from western Ireland, Dervish, will bring their brand of traditional Irish music to Coming's 171 Cedar Arts Center on Sunday after noon.

The concert is part of the "Live at 171" music series.

Dervish, formed in 1989 in Sligo County, Ireland, is fronted by singer Cathy Jordan, surrounded by musicians Brian McDonagh, Liam Kelly, Michael Holmes, and Shane Mitchell, who play instruments such as the mandola, bouzoki, accordion, guitar, fiddles, whistles, flute, bodhran, and harmonica.

Their music ranges from delicate melodies to lively jigs.

While they play a wide repertoire of centuries-old Celtic music, they are known to incorporate originals and stuff like Bob Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather," Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms" and Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" into their shows.

They have 10 albums under their belt and have carved out a name for themselves as ambassadors of Irish music over a decade of touring inter nationally, including performances at major folk festivals.

They were recently honored as Ireland's top traditional/folk group by Hot Press, an Irish music magazine. 03/08/07
