Growing up as Jewish kids in Arizona and Nebraska, Aaron Bisman and Jacob Harris of Brooklyn-based Jdub Records had nothing to do during Christmastime but "order Chinese food and go to a movie," Harris jokes. With a fierce desire to make something more exciting out of Christmastime for young Jews like himself, four years ago he approached New York's Southpaw with the idea of an alt-party in celebration of Hanukkah. The first night, which featured Matisyahu (who was signed to the label at the time) was a great success, and now the event has expanded to cities such as Chicago and Boston. "We are proud of this culture, and also of being able to present something authentically Jewish," says Harris. The lineup this year includes folk-punk-Gyspy-Slavic band Golem, who are releasing their new album, "Off The Boat," Klezmer hip-hop mixmaster SoCalled; and HEEB Magazine. "Our band will play some Hanukkah songs, one of them 'Ocho Candelitas' in Ladino, which is an old Spanish dialect," says Annette Ezequiel of Golem. No one is expected, however, to perform the Adam Sandler hit, even though Ezequiel admits she "loves that song."
