Growing up as Jewish kids in Arizona and Nebraska, Aaron Bisman and Jacob Harris of Brooklyn-based JDub Records had nothing to do during Christmas time but “order Chinese food and go to a movie,” jokes Harris. With a fierce desire to make something more exciting out of Christmas time for young Jews like himself, four years ago he approached Southpaw with the idea of Jewltide, an alt-party in celebration of Hanukkah, which would include music acts, free latkes, jelly donuts, egg rolls as well as dreidls and lit menorahs. The first night, which featured Matisyahu (who was signed to the label at the time), was a great success, and now the event has expanded to cities like Chicago and Boston. “Five or six years ago, there was nothing like this, but now there are more than 10 events, but none of real Jewish content,” Harris says. “We are proud of this culture, and also of being able to present something authentically Jewish.” The lineup this year includes folk-punk-Gyspy-Slavic band Golem (who is releasing its album Off The Boat), Klezmer hip-hop mixmaster SoCalled, The LeeVees, DJ Anaan, DJ Shot’Nez and Ori Kaplan from the international ensemble Balkan Beat Box. “It will be a drunken revelry with jokes about the oil and free food,” says Annette Ezekiel of Golem. “Our band will play some Hanukkah songs, one of them ‘Ocho Candelitas’ in Ladino, which is an old Spanish dialect.” No one’s expected to perform the Adam Sandler hit, even though Ezekiel admits she “loves that song.”
