PRI's The World, CD Review >>
For our Global Hit today, we're going to hear about something called Jewltide. Sounds like Yuletide, but it's not really about Christmas.
The World's Marco Werman explains.
Jewltide is the creation of Aaron Bisman and Jacob Harris. They're a couple of Jewish guys who run a record label called JDub in Brooklyn. Three years ago, they were searching for something new and entertaining to do this time of year. That's when they came up with the idea for a musical event to celebrate Hanukkah -- and they called it Jewltide. It's a party-slash-concert that showcases new musical talent.
Now Jewltide has grown into a four-city tour. There's also a new compilation CD out. That's "Latke Clan" by a band called the LeeVees. You may have first heard the song on the band's own CD "Hannukkah Rocks."
Another group that's part of the Jewltide tour is Golem. Their song called "School of Dance" has nothing to do with Hanukkah -- but it still has a good beat.
All told, nine bands and solo artists are featured on the compilation CD. The disc is called "Rooftop Roots: Volume Two."
Many of the artists on that CD are performing this weekend in Washington, DC and Brooklyn, New York -- as the 2006 Jewltide Tour comes to a close.
