While most of us try to avoid doing last minute Christmas shopping, there are always the procrastinators that wait right up until the final moments that the stores are open to purchase their gifts. For those that truly believe in delaying things as long as possible, here’s a few suggestions in the boxed set, DVD and book line that should satisfy the music junkie, yet also not blow a hole in your budget.

Elijah Wald - Global Minstrels – Voices of World Music (Routledge)

Though interest in world music continues to grow, it remains difficult for many Americans to not only find the recordings, but to really know which performers are important or find out more about the history and evolution of different styles. Former Boston Globe world music critic Elijah Wald’s new book covers the key artists and performers from five continents, while also offering the complete novice a thorough introduction to international sounds and letting the musicians themselves explain what they’re doing through a series of interviews. Whether explaining the differences between Southern and Central African sounds, taking readers through the network of  Latin American genres, examining Europe and Arabic styles or exploring in Hawaiian and Native American music its links to other cultures, Wald does an admirable and commendable job of explanation without oversimplification. Whether you enjoy flamenco, salsa, tango or township tunes, Global Minstrels will extend and update your musical knowledge.
