Tango is the bluesy jazz of urban Argentina, born in a gutbucket and destined for the concert hall, primal yet potentially exquisite art. With Tango Jointz, producer Claus Zundel collaborated with Argentine musicians in a project to make the music relevant to new audiences. To achieve this, he harnessed the thorny dynamics of tango, powered by the accordian-like bandoneon, to dance beats, the curlicues o flamenco guitar, the lilt to Brazilian carnival, using tango as the bottled exotic seasoning in a postmodern stew. What results is as pleasant as background music, gaining intensity at those moments when diva Bellma Cespedes seizes the microphone. The most organic fusion occurs on two trakcs. "Alone Together," where tango and '50s cool jazz converge in a melancholy after-hours session, and similarly, 'Nuit sur les Champs Elysees," with its nicotine-tinged noir feel. 02/08/07
