TINARIWEN Aman Iman - World Village
The nevelty of Tinariwen's backstory got people interested, but anyone who gave a serious listen to this guitar-slinging band of nomadic Taregs from the Sahara in nothern Mali was hooked (including the likes of Robert Plant, Carlos Santana and Thom Yorke, all of whom are fans). Tinariwen are members of an ethnic minority, and they make rebel music, singing for the independence of their people, but the spirit of these haunting and spartan songs moves far beyond politics, and struggle. With their third record, the guitars still switch between droney trance blues and heavy psychedelic grit, and skeletal but ecstatic percussion still propels the songs. At times this music may sound completely foreign to American ears, with its swinging (and potentially confusing) off-beat clapping and supremely poised minimal djembe drumming on "Awadidjen," while with others, like on the very Hendrix-like "Assouf," you might not do a double-take if you heard it on a classic rock station.
