Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Cd Review in >>
The liner notes call it the "guitars of revolution." I call it a campfire groove with a serious attitude.
Rebellious lyrics and in-your-face rock beats from the African desert is the best way to characterize Tinariwen's new recording.
Singing songs of independence for the people of Mali, "Aman Iman," which means "Water of Life, is 52 minutes of indigenous guitar licks with an occasional nod to outside influences, especially Carlos Santana and Led Zeppelin.
The recording, which is sung mostly in the French and Tamashek languages, tells the history of the Tuareg rebellion and the role played by the Tinariwen in this struggle for freedom.
Good world music will always transport the listener. Tinariwen does that and then some.
