4 stars (out of 4)

Like wind, sand and stars scouring the stark expanses of the Sahara, the unearthly voices, the propulsive, handmade rhythms and the roving, droning electric guitars of Tuareg band Tinariwen ramble through the vast spaces of a listener's soul in a peregrination that's as chilling as it is jaw-dropping. The third disc from the collective of former rebel fighters reveals a band able to purify and fortify a sound that already was unspeakably moving in its raw simplicity and strength. And this album includes a few songs that swirl with a quiet and eerie beauty that awakens an unsettling sense of the surrounding spirit or spirits said to fill the barren wilderness.

The music can be called a return of rock and roll to its most primordial roots, which is not to say that the members of Tinariwen reinterpret the Western rock that has inspired their music. Rather, they have transcended it by incorporating its elements into the ancient bluesy sound that has long drifted over the desert spaces. It's the same sound that gave birth to rock in the first place. So, the choruses and claps, the shouts and Stratocasters, while undeniably otherworldly to a newcomer, will evoke an instant recognition that says, "This rocks." Guitar fans of all stripes owe it to themselves to check this amazing band out. 05/11/07 >> go there
