Tinariwen: Aman Iman: Water Is Life (2006 [2007], World Village): Tuaregs from the desert of northeast Mali, where the lesson that life depends on water is painfully obvious. Their influences -- from the Sahel to the south, Arabs to the north, American rock from what must seem like outer space -- come from far away and resonate faintly in the vastness of their desolate space.
