-By Rob Weir While Western rockers were polishing their stage personae, the Tuareg nomads of the Malian band Tinariwen were mining Led Zeppelin for rebellious energy and Carlos Santana for licks that touch the soul and dealing with war-torn society. And that's why this group of desert dwellers is light-years ahead of airbrushed studio bands both musically and politically. Tinariwen give us guitar with bite and burst rhythms that force you to move, call-and- response vocals filled with pain and passion, and songs that have social relevance. Some is soulful and bluesy, some angry, some jazzy and meditative, some evocative of ritual dance, and all of it is expertly crafted and riveting. The title translates "Water is Life" and these fluid selections nourish the spirit. 04/19/07
