TINARIWEN: AMAN IMAN: WATER IS LIFE (WORLD VILLAGE)
It's thrilling to hear something as familiar as the electric guitar in a new context. Tinariwen's sound, forged in near-isolation in the southern Sahara, seems to draw on half-remembered lines from the blues, Middle Eastern and African sources. But what comes out is something wholly theirs.
The band is made up of Tuareg freedom fighters who have waged battle both with guns and guitars. The songs concern autonomy for a nomadic people at odds with governments. But for those unfamiliar wit the language or history, it's the guitars - stinging, roiling, as sharp as a bayonet, that make the strongest impression.
