Tinariwen Aman Iman (World Village)
Though Tinariwen first formed in 1982 in Qadhafi's rebel camps, it took 18 years for their sounds to be heard around the world. During that time, the band recorded (via cassette) their music on the streets and in the deserts of Mali. Seamlessly fusing Eastern melodies and vocals with western drumming and electric guitar, Tinariwen crosses more borders than can be counted. Indie-rock ears might hear the group's bassy grooves in contemporary folk-blues acts like Brightblack Morning Light, while any jam-band follower could easilt fall under their spell. Aman Iman, their latest record and second to be released worldwide, is not a departure from 2004's Amassakoul, but after 25 years of untouched trailblazing, the band's still on a rung all to themselves. -SH 05/01/07
