Aman Iman: Water is Life 2007 World Village
This tribe of Touareg musicians, who met while banding together in rebel camps in the Southern Sahara, knows something of exile and generational gaps unfathomabable to us as Westerners. Tinariwen sings the "desert blues" full of longing for divided families and homelands, expressed with wailing vocals, buzzing electric guitars, and organic handclaps. In a region with no postal or telephone system, early Tinariwen bootleg tapes became "a grassroots voice of rebellion" and the music still remains .a remarkable testament to a nomadic way of life. 05/01/07
