I had the chance to catch Vieux Farka Toure perform live with Mali's Tinariwen on Halloween night and he rocked the house, invoking Jimi Hendrix at times while his band whipped the crowd into a frenzy with funky Afro Pop jams. It's wild to think that Vieux's father, legendary Mali blues-guitarist Ali Farka Toure, tried to talk him out of playing the guitar ... but lucky for us, he ignored his fathers wishes. Tinariwen is known as one of the first Tuareg bands in Africa to use electric guitars and have performed at WOMAD and the Festival au Desert in the Sahara with Robert Plant. Their set featured raw and trance-inducing guitar riffs that layered on top of heavy drumming and would build in intensity until the crowd were jumping up and down as if possessed. Add the fact that this show was on Halloween, with dancing cows, nuns, ghosts, etc and that this was in an old church, only added to the experience.
