This Week in Live Music
by Bob Gendron

TINARIWEN, 7 p.m. (sold-out) and 10 p.m. at Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave. $24-$28. 773-728-6000. Geographically indiscriminate, blues has always been the native tongue of nomads. Having suffered a plight no less traumatic than that of America's early pickers, modern bluesman and Touareg exiles Tinariwen formed in Southern Algeria decades ago. The robed collective projects a fearless instinct that's developed from years of surviving in the Saharan desert. Mysterious and grave, Tinariwen's "Aman Iman (Water Is Life)" (World Village) is crossroads music at its undistilled best. Tempos dictate mood. Syncopated rhythms alternate between meditative trances and hand-clapped celebrations. African percussion frames topical lyrics sung and chanted in Tamashek and French. Don't worry about language barriers; no translations are needed. (Don't Miss It)  11/16/07 >> go there
