About World Music, CD Review >>

By: Megan Romer

I admit that I'm somewhat new to Fado... I had been vaguely familiar with Amalia Rodrigues, but it was only recently that I really delved into the genre, and I can't believe I waited so long. Fado is passionate, intense, bluesy, sad, joyful and so very accessible. I've added "Go to Lisbon and hunt down the best fado houses in the city and sit there for a few months" to my list of things to do before I die, but since that's probably not going to happen anytime soon, I have to satisfy myself with recorded music. Thus, I was absolutely thrilled to discover fadista Mariza's latest CD, Concerto Em Lisboa, and even more thrilled to discover that the amazing album is accompanied by an hour-long DVD documentary on the history of fado. Both the CD and the DVD are intensely wonderful, and have led me even further into the discovery of the genre. Recommended? Uh... yeah. Big time. 03/29/07 >> go there
