MARIZA Concerto em Lisboa (Times Square) The Iberian Peninsula has two great, living folk-music forms: flamenco in Spain and fado in Portugal. It used to be that more of us knew about the first than the second, but that's changed in the last half-century as fado has become a better-known and deservedly popular. It's easy to see why; it blends the immediate rhythmic appeal of flamenco, the haunting sensuality of the Argentine tango, and the wistful bravery one finds in Edith Piafs chansons into a superb sonic survey of heartache and fever And like so many art forms with deep roots, it can never be comfortable or free in a studio setting. Thus this exciting live album is an excellent introduction for the fado neophyte as well as a delectable treat for the connoisseur. Mariza is a famed exponent of fado, and her inner strength and spirit show through even in the midst of this big-orchestra, multimedia light show of an extravaganza Don't believe me? Just listen to her crooning or trumpeting or commanding or weeping way with sound and words, check out the many pictures in the booklet, and watch the DVD documentary Mariza and the Story of Fado, which accompanies the CD. My favorite selection on the disc, by the way, is the concert-closing "O Genie de Minna Terra" by the famed ladista Ainalia Rodrigues. Spine-tingling!  03/09/07
