"Concerto em Lisboa" (Times Square)
It may seem like madness - or "Loucura," to cite the title of the first song here - to sing the intimate music of fado, often called "the Portuguese blues," with a small orchestra and to a large audience (a gathering of 25,000 in fado's home, Lisbon). However, fado queen Mariza, who inherited the mantle from the late, great Amalia Rodrigues, pulls it off with theatrical flair and deeply moving vocals. A bonus BBC-TV DVD on "Mariza and the Story of Fado" helps makes this an ideal primer on the storied style. DOWNLOAD: "O Gente da Minha Terra (O People of My Land)" . 03/19/07
