Jazziz, Concert Review >>

Mariza has emerged as Portugal's reigning queen of fado and the genre's unlikely ambassador throughout the world. Originally from Mozambique, her African roots and Brazilian sensibility for crafting melodies have become the right ingredients for widening the landscape. Thanks to her, fado has been updated in the 21st century, and its bitterly nostalgic roots have transcended mere national fervor. From the Sydney Opera House to a recent sold-out concert at the 6,000-seat Royal Albert Hall in London, Mariza is at the forefront of the music's next evolution.

Concerto em Lisboa captures the magic of fado live, on a stage that, much like the young siren, sits at the crossroads of intersecting worlds. On a rainy summer night, Mariza performed her most popular repertoire before an audience of 25,000 fans at the gardens of Lisbon's Tower of Belem, a 500-year-old Gothic and Moorish structure facing the sea that stands between the River Tagus and the city. Centuries ago, during the era of discovery and colonization, it was the point of departure for sailors who hoped to conquer the unknown world. The symbolic backdrop is positioned in a place similar to where the young singer has launched her career: on the edge of tradition, of the city that's embraced her, and of the music that's taking off internationally.

On stage, Mariza's strong and translucent voice soared and took flight across a full range of emotions heightened by a full orchestra conducted by Brazilian composer Jaques Morelenbaum. Her new role as a UNICEF ambassador, a recent BBC documentary, and an upcoming North American tour are signs that Mariza and fado have conquered a world audience. Concerto em lisboa is a microcosm of how she went about doing it.
