by Ernest Barteldes

Hailing from the Ivory Coast, this singer-songwriter started her career early in her life. Discovered in 1996 by French guitarist Coline Laroche de Feline, they began both a musical and romantic partnership, and later relocated to France, where they could pursue better career opportunities and also a better environment for raising their young family. Fast-forward to 2006, when she found herself sharing the bill with legends like South African singer Vusi Mahlasela and Malian guitarist Habib Koite during the Putumayo Acoustic Africa tour through the U.S. and Europe, which helped launch her music on this side of the pond. Gnahore has an assured voice, which she uses to sing about the injustices faced by women in her native country, and also the exploitation of children and the slow deterioration of African values. The arrangements on her latest disc, "Na Afriki" (Cumbancha), have a Westernized flavor that makes them accessible to mainstream audiences. She sings in various languages, including dialects from Mali, Senegal and South Africa in addition to French. Onstage, she shows incredible energy, which reaches the audience whether or not you can understand her.
