Dobet Gnahoré. The brightest new Afro-pop star on the horizon was raised in an artists' colony in Ivory Coast. After moving to France with French guitarist Colin Laroche de Féline, she landed the "Best Newcomer" title from the BBC World Music Awards last year and was invited to tour with Habib Koité and Vusi Mahlasela on the Putumayo Acoustic Africa tour. On her most recent, quite lovely CD, "Na Afriki" (Cumbancha), Gnahoré sings in a rich, beautiful alto with flowing, dramatic phrasing, sometimes embellishing lyrics sung in Wolof, Dida or Malinké with chirps and warbles. Using a pan-African style that draws on gentle acoustic guitar as well as skipping Central and West African rhythms, her songs deal with African social issues (polygamy, genocide) as well as personal journeys. 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, Seattle, $20.50 (206-441-9729 or www.jazzalley.com). 09/19/07 >> go there
