Conventional wisdom pegs the multiracial 14-piece Brooklyn group Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra as mainly a good Fela tribute band reviving Afrobeat for American audiences. But that's not the whole story. The band, at the Cat's Cradle tonight, adds jazz, funk and Latin groove to the polyrhythmic stew, and does it well enough on record to ensure an even hotter live show. 01/17/03
