Antibalas-- You're in for a treat if you've never seen live Afrobeat music before. Nothing can compare to a full-sized horn section blasting out funky lines as the percolating beat of several drummers hammer on your body-you can't help but move to the music. Hailing from New York City, Antibalas is a formidable funk force that draws inspiration from Fela's seminal work in the '70s. The band has even been known to toss in the occasional Fela cover for good measure, but this crew is very capable of getting things hot and sweaty with tunes from its Liberation Afro Beat Vol. 1 (Ninja Tune). The band will also be previewing stuff from its next joint, scheduled for release in March. The debut disc is a pale shadow of what the band is capable of on any given night these days-they've grown unstoppably powerful and tight from regular touring and ubiquitous activity in N.Y.C.
