Financial Times, CD Review >>
-by David Honigmann
"Africa, Africa, Africa", sings Papa Noel on "Africa Mokili Mobimba", the opening track on his new album. But the musical backing is heavy with Cuban sounds: tres, bongos, Caribbean trumpets. Noel (who owes his name to his birth on Christmas Day in 1940) is a veteran of the Congolese rumba scene of the 1950s and 1960s; here, with a band drawn equally from Congo and Cuba, he celebrates the transatlantic connections of the music. When Manu Dibango adds nostalgic saxophone to two tracks, it could be late-night Leopoldville half a century ago. 04/28/07 >> go there
