-by George Varga
For a far more modern take on Eastern European music, this Brooklyn-based collective creates the ultimate mash-up by mixing in techno, hip-hop, dub-reggae, funk, trance and various Middle Eastern styles. Co-led by two Israelis, ex-Gogol Bordello saxophonist Ori Kaplan and former Firewater drummer/computer programmer Tamir Muskat, the nine-piece group is gutsy enough to have performed in Jerusalem with a guest rapper from Palestine.
But breaking down borders, musical and political, is what Balkan Beat Box is all about. The band's second album of self-described “Mediterranean dancehall” manages to sound rootsy and experimental at the same time. 05/10/07 >> go there
