If you are going to put an exclamation point in your band name, you'd better have a declarative, high-velocity sound to back it up. Indie band !!! makes good Dance Punk music, but not quite in the "three !'s" range. Brooklyn's multi-culti nine-piece brass-band-on-steroids SLAVIC SOUL PARTY! could deservedly take that extra "!" off their hands. Drummer/founder Matt Moran calls SSP's music "neighborhood music" as opposed to World music, because the group members bring in rhythms and influence from their varying backgrounds, which result in the tinges of Jazz, Hip Hop, N'awlins Brass, Latin music and Rock (to name just a few ingredients in their genre-stew) evident in their trad-meets-modernity Balkan music sound. Rhythms are vital in SSP's mix. On their latest CD, Teknochek Collision, the mostly instrumental band provides the mystique and infectious beats of Old World music (they have been embraced in Yugoslavia for their grasp on tradition), but the subtle New World additives and global reach put them in the league of fellow "Neo Gypsy" music travelers like Balkan Beat Box and Gogol Bordello. The band performs a free show at Northside's The Comet Wednesday -- bring an extra pair of dancing shoes. And a few extra exclamation points! They've earned them. 513-541-8900.
