LIKE A FIELD TRIP FOR A BELLY DANCING CLASS

At least that's what the Balkan Beat Box show at the Social last night felt like. The standard math for a downtown rock show was all off; onstage there were two drummers, two horn players, a guitarist, a bassist, all of whom took a crack at the mic at some point during the show. Weirder still was the inverse ratio of men-to-women. Typically — whether a punk band, an indie band or whatever — it's solid 2:1 men:women. Unless Big 10-4 or Melissa Ferrick is playing. Last night, it was reversed, and the floor was packed with drunk, booty-shakin' chicks, almost all of whom seemed to be first-year bellydance students. (One of 'em, god bless her, clearly thought she was in the advanced class. I'm pretty sure she wasn't. But a certain lead singer of a certain funky local band didn't seem to mind, as he was making considerable time with her.) So yeah, a band best described as a funk-minded Gogol Bordello (or, possibly, an Eastern Bloc Fishbone) was celebrated by white girls dancing like black girls dancing like Egyptians.

Totally fucked up.

But also totally awesome, mainly due to the completely dominating force that Balkan Beat Box was onstage. Another in a string of magnificently high-energy shows to roll through town, these guys were as spirited as they were sonically unique. Though I'm a big fan of most international sounds, Eastern European music always makes me want to jam a hammer and sickle in my eyes. But BBB showed the hard-drinking, loud-partying vibe that can make the music effective. Plus, the skinny-ass lead singer was totally rocking a Prince tattoo on his arm.
