Newsday, CD Review >>
-by Marty Lipp
One of a cohort of New York City bands remaking Eastern European music, Balkan Beat Box does its mixmastering with a particular exuberance. Once they get a groove going, which is usually immediately, these restless jesters are as likely to toss in a horse's whinny as a klezmer clarinet.
While making liberal use of rhythm machines and samplers, the band's sound brims with brass, bass, and surf guitar. Some groups update traditional music, but Balkan Beat Box puts it on equal footing with the contemporary, doing whatever juggling they need to in order to get people up and having a good time. 06/01/07
