Fusing Arabic, Jewish, Gypsy and American heritages with hip-hop and dancehall rhythms, Nu Med is the first album I've ever come across that is capable of summoning Parliament's Muthaship, sustaining a three-day ecstasy high and charming snakes, all at the same time. Signed to JDub Records (Matisyahu's label), the Brooklyn-based sextet Balkan Beat Box has followed up their self-titled debut album with a very danceable conglomeration of ancient Moroccan and Mediterranean melodies. Vocalist Tomer Yosef throws it down like Ali Baba and the Forty MCs on "Hermetico," and there's some seriously funkalicious guitar and quasi-Atari keyboard effects on "Pachima." On the whole, Nu Med is pretty likeable. 05/15/07 >> go there
