BALKAN BEAT BOX
"Nu-Med" (JDub) Grade: B+
Mixing past and present is tricky business, so throwing dub, hip-hop and techno into the same pot as Gypsy and Jewish traditions could make for an unholy mess. Instead Balkan Beat Box make it sound as tight as a jammed rave tent. This six-piece New York outfit bridges punked-out folk from the Middle East and Eastern Europe with unlikely connectors, including Jamaican dancehall and funk samples.
