What a splendid musical mongrel this disc is. Energetic, original and filled with flash, the second album from Balkan Beat Box packs the fun of a live show where the frenzy doesn't stop. The New York City outfit has spent much the past year keeping audiences jumping at festivals such as Bonnaroo, playing its musical collision that seems to come from every corner of the globe.
Jamming Gypsy and Jewish horns are the main ingredients, and they whip into some inspired solos. But Arab, Jamaican and Mexican sounds are also prominent, as are jangly guitar lines, booming dub system rhythms, tight turntable tomfoolery and multilingual MC monkeyshines. What else will you hear? How about a clarinet on fire, a yelping Bulgarian choral duet, a Syrian songstress breaking into rap, a Moroccan funk clash, some sampled farm animals and a baby's giggle, and a track that sounds like a rasta bullfighter's blues. In this group's hands. It's all amazing stuff.
