Dirty Linen, Concert Review >>
One of the festival’s remarkable attributes was its diversity, pulling together a wide array of cultures and genres into a seamless flow. Perhaps the weekend’s best surprise was Afro-Cubans Jose Conde Y Su Ola Fresca who wove Cuban jazz, salsa, son, guarjira, bolero, and chanqui with colorful metaphors and swaying story lines. One tune, “Tira La Tierra,” expressed throwing dirt on a relationship, in essence, smothering its fire. “Transplanté” dealt with the life of an emigrant. 03/01/03
