Coming from Santiago -- one of the 10 islands constituting Cape Verde -- the young singer/songwriter Tcheka grew up around the strains of batuque, a traditional rhythm played by women on percussion instruments improvised from cloth and plastic bags. (The Church had banned the use of drums.) He transposed these percussive patterns to acoustic guitar and mingled them with the blues-echoing style of mainland African troubadours such as Ali Farka Touré -- but where Farka Touré's music is rich with overtones of John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins, Tcheka is closer in spirit to the folky aspects of Ritchie Havens and (early) Bill Withers and the suavely introspective R&B of Marvin Gaye.

His debut disc is Nu Monda and he opens for Evora at the San Francisco Jazz Festival.  06/08/07 >> go there
