Cape Verde is known for divas—Cesaria Evora, Maria Alice, Lura, Suzanna Lubrano. But Tcheka is one of the most exciting male voices to come from the islands since Bana. Cape Verde lies nearly 400 miles west of Senegal and due east of the Caribbean. Tcheka’s music has an in-between quality, with punchy, flowing riffs evoking West Africa alternating with skank beats. Then there are Portuguese influences, heard especially on “Agonia,” a song that’s somewhere between fado and traditional Cape Verdean morna. Tcheka’s a vocal chameleon as well. He can croon as smoothly as Samite, as roughly as Sting, or with the falsetto of a choir boy. Sometimes he’s more theatrical than natural, but the excitement outweighs the flaws.
