Tcheka, a Cape Verdean singer-songwriting sensation, will be performing at the Berklee Performance Center on Saturday, June 23rd. He will open the show for the 'Barefoot Diva' herself, Cesaria Evora, for whom he has written music, just one of the many Cape Verdean singers he has touched with his music. Widely considered Cape Verde's finest and most popular female vocalist, Evora recreates the dreamy atmosphere of her native island home with a luscious blend of intoxicating vocals and compelling lyrics. She is known as the queen of morna, the island's sweet, soulful version of the blues, which fuses West African rhythms and European sensibilities with Caribbean and Brazilian influences. Following the recent eruption of great women singers from Cape Verde, along comes a new sound from a young man named Tcheka. While the world has heard the female voice emanating from the Cape Verdean islands, Tcheka, fed and nurtured by these women, brings a new perspective with his album, Nu Monda (Times Square/4Q Records).
