Tcheka
Nu Monda (Times Square)
-David Luhrssen

An obscure former Portuguese colony off the African coast, Cape Verde has become known in some circles for the singing of Cesaria Evora. Her latest album of slightly wistful, slightly melancholy ballads, Rogamar, eloquently reiterates her strengths.  The material is elegant in an Old World-meets-Africa way, not entirely unlike the stately dance music of Cuba in the 1930's and '40s, and bearing a cool emotional affinity with the samba of another former Portuguese colony, Brazil.

Evora isn't the island nation's only musical export. Singer and guitarist Tcheka belongs to a younger generation, yet has many affinities with Evora.  On Nu Monda, the cool breeze of Brazil finds an echo in songs of quiet yearning, even when he plucks his guitar percussively and joins his voice with a circle of rumbling African drums. 06/21/07
