As much as some Americans (and Brits and … ) rag on the French, our Gallic cousins often have darn good taste in music. Take Cape Verdean diva Cesaria Evora -- in the early ´90s, she became a star in France, and it didn't matter that she was over 40 and would never be the next Pussycat Doll. With a sumptuous, worldly-wise alto voice, Evora's been hailed by many as a cross betwixt chanteuses fantastiques Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday and has received props from Madonna, Bonnie Raitt, and the late 60 Minutes man Ed Bradley. As her island homeland is off the coast of northwestern Africa, not far from Portugal, her music reflects an advantageous overlapping of cultures -- fado (the Portuguese counterpart to acoustic rural blues), African and Brazilian rhythms and melodies, Parisian pop, and the ocean waves and currents that separate them.  06/08/07 >> go there
