Cesaria Evora at the Calvin
Acclaim was a long time coming for singer Cesaria Evora. Although she attracted attention as a young woman in her home country. Cape Verde, she wasn't able to make a living in music, so she quit in the mid-'70s.
She mounted a comeback bid in 1985 at the age of 45 and had built herself into an intemational star by the mid-'90s, singing a style called "moma," a blend of British sea shanties, Portuguese fado music and Brazilian modhinas set to West African rhythms.
Evora is still relatively unknown in the United States, but her 10th album, last year's "Rogamar," is a soulful collection of songs written for her by Cape Verde songwriters.
She performs Simday at the Calvin Theatre, 19 King St., Northampton, Mass. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $42.50, $32.50 and $22.50. Information: 800-843-8425.
