In Cape Verde, off the western coast of Africa, there's a musical form known as the morna, which amalgamates its closest continent's percussion with elements of Brazilian, Portuguese and even British musical forms. And Cesaria Evora could perhaps claim to be the queen of the morna.

Evora began singing as a teenager and had some minor fame in the late 1960s, but she gave up during the 1970s and didn't return to it until 1985, when her lucent voice truly began to reach ears internationally. By the mid-1990s, she had even thoroughly toured the U.S.

In 2004, Evora received a Grammy for her album "Voz d'Amor". Last year, she released "Rogamar," an ocean-themed disc that she recorded mostly in her hometown of Mindelo and that maintains the late-period career of a most intriguing artist.
