Santa Fe New Mexican, CD Review >>
By ROBERT NOTT
This album from the 13-year-old Mexican folk ensemble ricochets from one musical genre to the next without any warning, but it will probably make you glad you signed up for the ride. Though the album's title song (penned by Woody Guthrie in 1940) speaks to the bands decision to dedicate the album to immigrants, not all the songs follow that theme. "Yo Vendo Unos Ojos Negros," for instance, is a surprisingly bouncy rendition of an old tonada (melody) about a guy who pines for woman of African ancestry. The marimba-motored "Tabasco Suite" is a foot-tapping instrumental piece, and to throw you off guard, the ensemble also offers a fun rendition of the second movement of JS Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major. "La Rabia" is a traditional mariachi song driven by guitars and violins ("rabia" means rage or rabies). The soothing marimba sound of "La Llorona" might make you want to settle in for a cold beer and a warm sunset — until you realize the ensemble is singing about the ghostly weeping woman of Hispanic lore.
