Rio de Janeiro or simply “Rio”is a major city in southeastern Brazil and home to over eleven million people. It’s also the birthplace of the seductive Bossa Nova and home of the emerging dance genre of Funk Carioca. Probably best known for carnival and festivals the city embraces creativity and welcomes even the more aggressive gangsta rap as long as it’s more about social justice than mere boasting and violence. Enter Verge Records’ The Inspiring New Sounds of Rio de Janeiro compilation with a sumptuous feast of cutting edge music from the gritty but hopeful to pure jazz love and flavored with funk, hip hop and an undercurrent of retro soul. Reflecting the beauty and contrasts of a major city battling poverty and economic injustices Verge hopes to level the playing field - proceeds will help build a recording studio in Rio.
